Drywall Estimates
What drywall contractors do
Drywall contractors hang, tape, mud, and finish the walls and ceilings inside your home. They handle full installs for new rooms and additions, skim-coating over old plaster or damaged walls, texture matching, and repairs — from doorknob holes to water-damage patches to full ceiling replacements. A good finish is all in the taping and sanding; that's what separates a pro job from a DIY one.
We are a free quote-matching service, not a drywall company. We never perform the work ourselves — pricing, scheduling, materials, and the job itself come from the independent local contractor you choose.
When you might need drywall
Common projects local drywall contractors handle for homeowners:
- New rooms and additions — full hang, tape, and finish for new drywall
- Remodels — patching and finishing after plumbing, electrical, or layout changes
- Water damage repair — cut out, replaced, and finished after leaks
- Ceiling repair and replacement — sagging, cracked, or stained ceilings renewed
- Texture and skim coating — matching existing texture or smoothing old walls
- Garage and basement finishing — turning unfinished space into real rooms
What to include in your request

Drywall Homeowner Guide
Drywall guide: what to know before you start
Drywall looks simple — flat walls, smooth paint — but the difference between an okay job and a great one comes down to decisions you make before the work starts. Here is what homeowners usually wish they had known first.
Finish levels 0–5, in plain English
The drywall industry grades finished walls on a 0–5 scale. In everyday terms:
- Levels 0–2: taped joints with one or two thin coats of joint compound. Fine for garages, attics, and areas never seen up close.
- Level 3: an extra coat and some sanding. Acceptable for walls that will be covered in heavy texture.
- Level 4: the standard for most homes — smooth enough for flat or eggshell paint in normal lighting.
- Level 5: a full skim coat over the entire surface. This is what eliminates visible seams and “flashing” (joint compound showing through paint) under bright or raking light, like near big windows.
If seams or tape lines are showing through your current paint, the original finish was probably level 3 or 4 in tough lighting — a level 5 skim coat is the fix, not another coat of paint.
Repair or replace?
Small holes, dents, and popped nails are straightforward repairs — a contractor patches, tapes, and blends the area. Replacement makes more sense when boards are sagging, crumbling, water-stained across large areas, or buried under many layers of old repairs. If the damage came from a leak, fix the leak first; new drywall over an active moisture problem will fail again.
Standard board vs. moisture-resistant board
Standard drywall and moisture-resistant board (often green or purple) cost roughly the same to hang, but the moisture-resistant type holds up far better in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basements. It is not waterproof — it just tolerates humidity and occasional splashes without breaking down. Behind tub and shower surrounds, contractors typically use cement board instead.
Texture hides a lot
Orange-peel, knockdown, and other textures are popular partly because they hide minor imperfections that a perfectly smooth wall would show. Going from textured walls to smooth costs more because every flaw must be addressed. If you love the smooth modern look, budget for level 5 finishing.
